Each month we recommend the best restaurants, pubs and hotels across the UK. This month, we took a trip to the Three Daggers Inn in rural Wiltshire...

Located in the heart of Wiltshire, the Three Daggers delicately balances all of the home comforts you’d expect from a B&B, along with a touch of luxury. As well as boasting a cosy pub and restaurant, there’s also an on-site micro brewery and deli/farm shop to peruse. Originally built as a public house and inn in the 1700s, the Three Daggers continues to be a welcome respite for holiday makers. Rooms are spacious, comfortable and furnished to a high standard. Our ‘Caulston’ room was rich in character, thanks to its exposed oak beam ceiling, and filled with tasteful furnishings and large windows that gave way to views of nearby fields. Thoughtful touches abound here; there’s a communal living area and kitchen for guests complete with a fire, newspapers and refreshments. You’ll also find Hunter wellies conveniently placed outside the bedrooms.

And the food?

The seasonally focused dinner menu is filled with the kind of high quality dishes you’d expect to find at a high-end restaurant, as opposed to a cosy inn. Terroir is also key, with the provenance of produce clearly stated and many of the ingredients grown on the nearby Priory Farm. We kicked off with mackerel pâté with tomato and tabasco gel and toast – a deliciously umami dish that was plated with finesse – and a goat’s cheese mousse with pickled vegetables and olives. The mains were just as impressive; the crispy Cornish Pollack with squid ink, charred baby gem, samphire mussels and crayfish was one of the most exciting fish dishes we’ve tasted this year. To finish, a banana parfait with white chocolate sorbet, toasted peanuts, macaroons and glazed banana was gobbled up in an instant.
