From flavoured gin to hand-sliced smoked salmon, here are some of the standout products created by winners of the Great British Food Awards
Every year, hundreds of artisan producers from across the country enter our Great British Food Awards, with everything from artisan gin to slow-reared meat products. We and our celebrity judges love having the chance to sample them. We also like hearing about any new products they’ve released. Here’s a handpicked list of some of our favourites - plus where to get hold of them!
Deerness Distillery’s Vára Gin
Deerness Distillery consistently wins awards for its lovingly distilled craft spirits. The most recent addition is its Vára Gin, a brand new Orkney Craft Pink Gin. ‘Vára’ means ‘become spring’ in Old Norse, and each sip of this light, floral gin will transport you to spring time. Made with botanicals ranging from tarragon and elderflower to lemongrass and vanilla, this is a Juniper-led gin with herbaceous and citrus notes, leading to a sweet rose finish. Serve garnished with rose petals or with elderflower tonic, and garnished with a lime peel twist.
Martin Thomas Butchers’ Treacle Bacon
Martin Thomas Butchers, Pattingham, likes to bring old traditional products back to the nation’s table, maintaining its long historic links to the meat trade. Its latest is treacle-infused streaky bacon which contains none of the allergens found in a lot of modern bacon. It is available in slices, lardons and even slabs for you to slice yourself at home.
Orkney Gin’s Rhubarb Old Tom
We can’t get enough of last year’s award-winning flavoured gin, Rhubarb Old Tom. The judge, Martha Collison, said ‘this gin is simply outstanding - and probably the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of trying! It is Turkish delight in a bottle, heady with rose, cinnamon and sweet rhubarb.’ Old tom is a style of gin that dates back to the 18th century, and is renowned for its sweet, smooth finish.
Loch Fyne’s Hand-Sliced Smoked Salmon
Bradan Orach, winner of the Great Taste Awards 2020 and highly commended in the Great British Food Awards 2020, is a full flavoured smoked salmon, sliced by hand to deliver a superior texture and luxurious finish. Fresh Loch Fyne Scottish Salmon fillets are dry-cured with salt only, then smoked for longer over oak shavings from retired whisky casks for a fuller, richer flavour in the traditional style.
Lincoln Tea and Coffee’s Red Arrow’s Diamond Blend Coffee
Since being highly commended for their White Tea & Mango blend in the Great British Food Awards last year, Lincoln Tea & Coffee have released a new coffee blend to celebrate the Red Arrows. ‘Based in Lincolnshire, we love to see their distinctive Hawk fast-jets and trademark Diamond nine shape in our skies and often see them practising from our office windows,’ they explain. The blend is a sweet, complex 100% Arabica, with notes of nutty caramel sweetness. It’s served in a commemorative Red Arrows tin.
