Our favourite vegetable side dishes for your Christmas holiday table, from cheesy gratins to crispy roasted potatoes
For some people, it’s all about the turkey. But what we love best are those delicious side dishes, like a decadent cheesy gratin or a creamy dish of celeriac puree. Here’s our favourite simple side dishes for your Christmas dinner.
Cauliflower, Bacon & Mustard Gratin
This grown up cauliflower cheese recipe is a perfect addition to your Christmas dinner menu. The cheesy sauce is flavoured with crispy bacon and a kick of mustard, and topped with a crispy breadcrumb topping.
Nigel Slater’s Artichokes with Lemon & Parsley
The perfect side dish for roast gammon or tarragon roast chicken, these artichokes are easy to make and are in season in December.
Diana Henry's Beetroot & Potato Gratin
This creamy potatoes and beetroot gratin is an utter revelation. We love the earthiness of the beetroot paired with the soured cream filling. If you’re serving it with roast beef, then add a dollop of horseradish to the sauce!
Brussels Sprouts Slaw
For those of you haunted by overcooked sprouts, you can also make them into a crunchy salad. Simply shred the sprouts, add dates and almonds and a tasty honey mustard dressing. Delicious! As well as pairing it with your Christmas dinner, you can also serve it as part of your festive cheese platter.
Brown Butter Carrots with Hazelnuts
These brown butter carrots have a rich, nutty glaze and maintain a refreshing crunch. They’ll definitely have a place on our Christmas dinner table, as they’re so easy to make and taste delicious!
The Ultimate Crispy Roast Potatoes
It’s the ultimate Christmas holiday side dish and our favourite part of any roast dinner! Soft potatoes with golden, crispy edges - we can’t think of anything to beat it.
Balsamic Shallots with Celeriac Puree
Sweet shallots are roasted with balsamic vinegar, olive oil and thyme. Serve them by themselves for a chutney-like side dish, or use them to top a creamy celeriac puree.
Potato, Parsnip & Watercress Mash
These mashed potatoes have added parsnip and watercress, giving the creamy potatoes a sweet, earthy flavour. Great with turkey, beef or lamb!
Parsnip Tatin with Winter Pesto
This impressive side dish can also double as a main dish for any vegetarians at Christmas dinner. They’re cooked in a savoury tart tatin alongside a delicious pesto made of thyme, walnut, cheese, garlic and chilli. It’s a little more labour intensive than some of the other recipes on this list, but totally worth it!
