On the lookout for a rich, delicious Christmas pud with a twist? Claire Munnings thinks she might have found just what you need…

There’s no denying that a good Christmas pudding is an integral part of a festive day spread. Even if you’re not personally a fan, there’s something about the spectacle of a dark domed cake arriving at the table with fanfare (flames or no flames) that you just can’t beat.

For many, the making of a Christmas pud – with all the traditions of Stir Up Sunday – is a key part of their festive preparation. I have to admit, however, that I’ve never been organised enough to think that far in advance. What with presents to buy, school play outfits to organise and festive parties to arrange, making a fruit pudding is just one thing I can’t seem to find time to do. Instead, I like hunting around the shops for the best one to serve up, and over the years I’ve tried all sorts – including a particularly good one from Tiptree.

This year, though, I think I’ve found the best yet in the National Trust’s Double Chocolate and Orange Christmas Pudding (£10, shop.nationaltrust.org.uk). While traditional puds are well-loved by many, I like something with a contemporary twist – and this one feels like it will appeal to the masses. Orange and chocolate are always a winning combination, and the team at the National Trust have certainly done themselves proud here.

The rich fruit-based cake is perfectly paired with dark and white chocolate nibs and a lovely hit of orange liqueur, giving it even more of a zesty citrus flavour when compared to traditional options. The chocolate addition is pure genius and I love the oozy dark stickiness it brings to the cake. With moist sponge and big bits of fruit that burst with flavour in your mouth, this really is a treat for your taste buds.

It’s the perfect size for two to four people, and handily can be microwaved as well as steamed or boiled – meaning any prep can be kept to a real minimum.

And I can’t sign off without mentioning the packaging – the beautiful blue and gold box showcases a stunning design which hints marvellously at the deliciousness inside. It’s sure to tantalise the taste buds of any guest you have round – so much so, I’d recommend keeping the box out on the side for as many people to see as possible!

Enjoy!
